THE CLIENT:
The Friends of the Dulwich Picture Gallery are a group of volunteers who organise social events and provide financial support for the Dulwich Picture Gallery (DPG). They aim to raise the profile of the Gallery and appeal to a wider audience.
Dulwich OnView (DOV) is the award-winning blog of the Friends of DPG, which I co-founded with other volunteers to extend the profile of DPG to a new online demographic.
THE BRIEF:
The Friends wanted a social media trainer and blog manager to train volunteers and also play a central role in ensuring the blog project ran smoothly. The volunteers needed to learn not just how to use the blogging software (WordPress) but also the principles of social media communications. The project required a blog manager to shape the role of the editorial team.
MY ROLE:
THE STRATEGY:
Dulwich OnView sets out to “Celebrate people and culture in and around Dulwich”. The aim of the blog is to provide an informal, behind-the-scenes look at people and events relating to DPG but also in and around the Dulwich area as a counterpoint to DPG’s formal website. The volunteers include Friends of DPG as well as people from the local community.
FEATURES:
THE RESULT:
Dulwich OnView won the Best Small Website Award 2010 at the International Museums and Web Conference in Denver, Colorado.

FEEDBACK:
“The Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of Friends who are prepared to put time and effort into this area of support for the Gallery, Dulwich and the surrounding area. Not only does OnView give publicity to the Gallery and the Friends but it also makes everyone aware of the position of the Gallery at the heart of the local community.
” — Jill Alexander, Chairman: Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery
“Congratulations to all the DOV team – of course this is thoroughly deserved; the Dulwich OnView phenomenon SHOULD be being recognised internationally. But isn’t it nice when it actually happens? Thanks from a very grateful Director.
” —Ian Dejardin, Director: Dulwich Picture Gallery
“Well done to all of the DOV team, this is quite an accolade. What you are doing with DOV, pushing the application of new technology to increase the awareness and excitement factor of the gallery, is really interesting. Congratulations and thankyou for all you are doing.
” —James Lupton, Chairman of Trustees: Dulwich Picture Gallery
On Project Managing the Redesign:
“You have done a fantastic job. It would not have happened without you!
” —Ingrid Beazley, Co-Editor: Dulwich OnView
